Update on Mental Health Ministry

For quite some time now the Sunshine Uniting Church and the Presbytery of Port Phillip West have been working together to develop a partnership for Mental Health Ministry.  This is actually a reworking of the previous ministry of Mental Health Chaplain located at Sunshine Hospital.  After a review it was decided to split the role into around one third in the psychiatric wards of the hospital and two thirds of the role located in the community – based at the Sunshine Uniting site. The funding for the position comes from the Presbytery.

The community based component will largely be activity based – offering groups such as art/craft, writing, gentle exercise, indoor recreation, peer support, outings, guest speakers on topics such as budgeting, nutrition, medication, self-care etc.  Uniting run an informal drop-in space in the foyer of the building already where people can come for a cuppa and a chat but there is no staff allocation of time for this, so the new worker will already have a number of people and activities on the site to get things rolling.

We are hoping the new position will be starting early in 2020 and we are getting excited about seeing how this role develops.
