We are very excited to announce the commencement of a new Mental Health Ministry to be located on the Sunshine Uniting site. The position is funded by the Presbytery of Port Philip West and has one third of its time located in the Psychiatric wards at Sunshine Hospital and two thirds of its time is based in the community – located on our church site. This will work in well with the many activities run by Uniting at the church site. The position will largely be running groups and activities, such as life skills, music, art and craft, relaxation and meditation, cooking and lunch together, outings, writing, peer support groups – and one on one pastoral conversations.
And Good News! we already have the person lined up to commence! Here is the announcement our Chair of Church Council made to the congregation recently when he announced the name of Fiona Bottcher.
Fiona is an exit student going into her first placement as a Deacon in the Uniting Church. Early in 2020, she will be ordained at her home church of Brunswick Uniting. As she commences the placement, she will be inducted at Sunshine UC. While being an exit student, Fiona has experience in the field of mental health through her volunteering and coordination of Olive Way at Brunswick Uniting, through her placement at Booroondara Community Outreach, and through being a tai chi instructor at Austin Hospital.
She is excited by the possibilities of this new placement and says in her letter of acceptance:
“I feel passionate about this placement and I look forward to responding to God’s call to work alongside Presbytery, Sunshine Hospital and Sunshine Uniting Church, following Jesus’ example of nurturing those who are too often marginalised and isolated in our community. It is such a privilege to be called to be in community with those living with mental illness and I commit to holding this placement with the prayerful reverence it deserves.”
Fiona’s ordination will be held at Brunswick Uniting on Sunday February 9 at 2.00pm and her induction service will be a week later on Sunday February 16 at Sunshine Uniting at 2.00pm.
We very much look forward to getting to know Fiona and growing the Mental Health Ministry.
